Isaret Jeffers' life is dedicated to helping migrants coming to Florida.

What You Need To Know

  • To Isaret Jeffers, there are many groups in Florida that could help migrants make the transition into American life

  • It came as a shock to her to see that, according to the governor’s office, the state paid for migrants to be sent up to New England.

  • According to the governor’s office, these flights were part of that $12 million program approved by the state legislature to transport migrants away from the state

“We provide today’s food, health, whatever they need,” Jeffers, head of the organization, Colectivo ARBOL, said. “When the people come here, a lot of people don’t realize a lot of things has happened in these countries.”

Those traumatic events are why Colectivo and Jeffers go out to spots, like Plant City, which we saw in July, to give supplies to people over the summer who work in the fields.

For her, it’s the right thing to do.

“Immigrants work hard for this country; you see it in the fields,” Jeffers said.

Which is why it came as a shock to her to see that, according to the governor’s office, the state paid for migrants to be sent up to New England.

To Jeffers, there are many groups in Florida that could help migrants make the transition into American life.

“We have a lot of organizations here that work for immigrants,” she said.

Because she says it’s not an easy step for people who are new to the country because of negative stigma and adjusting to new cultures.

Those obstacles, according to Jeffers, can lead to more red tape in trying to seek asylum or other avenues to stay in the country.

“We work hard for these people because we understand how hard it’s living here when you don’t have a house, food and shoes,” Jeffers said.

She’s thankful that at least these migrants are being cared for in Massachusetts and says with how expensive everything is, she can see why the governor doesn’t want even more people populating Florida but says there has to be a better way.

“I’m thinking maybe he’s trying to protect Florida but not that way,” she said. “We can help. We can help.”

According to the governor’s office, these flights were part of that $12 million program approved by the state legislature to transport migrants away from the state.
