The Nurseys started their main business, Direct Components in 1998. The company works with manufacturers to source hard to find electronic components for businesses.
The success of that business eventually led to the couple wanting to give back.
“The Nursey Foundation exists to work with local nonprofits in the Tampa Bay area to help them, not only with funding but also strategic services,” said Aaron Nursey.
Services which include helping nonprofits grow and improve.
Still in its infancy, the fourth-month old foundation has already raised more than $5 million.
For Heidi Nursey, the foundation is something she’s envisioned for years.
“I’m the type of person that wants to help people,” she said. “Empower them. Elevate them. Whatever I can do, it’s always been something i grew up wanting to do.”
The main focuses of the foundation include the issue of mental health and how it affects those from all walks of life. Also, a main focus: the ongoing and ever increasing challenge of homelessness and hunger.
The nonprofit also helps young adults transfer out of foster care and parents who are financially struggling to care for their sick children.
“We both came from humble beginnings and it’s just the fiber of my being,” she said. “I just want to help.”
Aaron Nursey agreed, saying he and his wife are far from heroes.
“I think anybody in this position would do the same thing we do,” he said. “But i don’t think were heroes either. I feel like we’re just trying to give back to the community.”
