SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. — A Hillsborough County woman who spent more than 40 years in the medical profession continues to put that experience to good and important use.

Mary Porterfield is a retired nurse and a current emergency medical responder with the Sun City Emergency Squad, a post she has manned as a volunteer during the past five years.

At 92 years of age.

What You Need To Know

She works on the wheelchair van transporting patients to hospitals, physical therapy, dialysis treatments and more getting them secured in the van and traveling with them.

Her duties are, at times physically challenging, but she said there are plenty of jobs here that are not.

“People need to understand, seniors that say I’m too old to do all this, a lot of the jobs are where can sit down,” Porterfield said. “I don’t think I’ll ever get too old to do this.”

Porterfield is not the only volunteer at the squad.

“They’re all volunteers,” she said. “There’s no paid employees here. All volunteer. 100%.”

Working hand-in-hand with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, the squad’s ambulance service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

“We are basic life support and the county with their paramedics is advanced life support,” said the squad’s assistant chief Robin Watt.

And about the unstoppable Mary Porterfield?

“She is my hero,” Watt said. “At 92 to be doing this, helping other people with enthusiasm that she has is just remarkable.”

And as for Mary, she loves her volunteer work.

“The spirit of this place is so great because people that volunteer love what they’re doing,” she said. “And they do it because they want to.”
