TIERRA VERDE, Fla — The island of Tierra Verde was expecting to get slammed by Hurricane Ian, but since they were spared residents are focused on helping those devastated by the storm.
What You Need To Know
- 'Island helping Island' is a donation drive taking place in Tierra Verde
- The idea came about after residents stocked up for Hurricane Ian
- Trucks of supplies will head to Fort Myers on Monday
"Somebody just dropped off a big car load of dog food, bleach and cleaning supplies," said Island helping Island organizer Amanda Holup.
These are all necessary items Holup says are desperately needed by Hurricane Ian victims in Southwest Florida.
Tierra Verde donors have come back multiple times to gift some items they stocked for themselves to prepare for the storm.
"There were a few people who stopped by and they were in tears and they say they felt that they could not do enough," said Holup. "They said the little bit that they brought some water paper towel wasn't enough to fill the whole in losing your housing."
Amanda says they have collected enough for not just one but two U-Hauls filled with supplies.
"People have been coming in by the droves," said volunteer Melanie Coleman-Simon.
Melanie Coleman-Simon has been living in Tierra Verde for 38 years and says they were expecting to be hit by Ian but were spared the devastation that so many are dealing with at the moment.
"Just seeing what they're going through knowing that could be us," said Coleman-Simon.
"It's not just people in our neighborhood but everybody knows somebody who was affected by this," said Amanda Holup.
Everything collected will go to the Gladiolus food pantry and Cajun Navy in Fort Myers who will distribute them to the needy.
"One can of paint, one bottle of water, one paper towel is more than someone had yesterday," she added.
The donation drives ends Sunday at 7 pm.
The trucks will be headed to Fort Myers on Monday.
