LAKELAND, Fla. — It was an emotional morning at Victory Church as the community said goodbye to fallen Polk County Deputy Blane Lane.

Crowds packed the church and fellow law enforcement their their support for Lane inside and outside of the venue.

After the memorial service inside, a ceremony conducted by law enforcement took place outside.

Polk Sheriff Grady Judd called Lane eager and brilliant and likened the loss to losing a child of his own. Lane’s burial will be private.

Lane’s grandfather Darrell Sodders spoke, as did other family members, including Lane’s father and sister.

“I know that I will never get over this,” Sodders said. “I love him so much, my heart is shattered. I hope the memory of Blane Lane will go forever. But I will see him again one day.”

Lane was killed in the line of duty Oct. 4 after being shot in the crossfire while serving a warrant outside Polk City.

Lane was in a concealed position outside the mobile home, when the suspect pulled a silver handgun. Two deputies in the mobile home opened fire, with one of the bullets striking Lane outside.

Donations for Lane’s family can be made to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.
