WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd says a man and his teen son face multiple charges, including attempted murder, after allegedly shooting at a woman sitting in her car at their apartment complex. The woman was unharmed. Sheriff Judd said it all started with a good deed.

What You Need To Know

  •  The pair allegedly said they thought someone was breaking in

  •  The man had brought medication that was mistakenly delivered

  • The pair shot 7 times

“This ranks among the craziest stuff that I have seen in awhile,” Judd told reporters at a news conference Monday.

Judd said on Saturday, a man who lives in the Arbours at Garden Grove apartment complex dropped off medication that was mistakenly delivered to him at the door of a neighbor, Gino Colonacosta, 73. The man was seen on alerts sent to the cell phones of Colonacosta and his 15-year-old son from their Ring doorbell.

“They think they’re being broken into. Are you kidding me?” Judd said of what Colonacosta reportedly told investigators.

According to the arrest report, the two grabbed semi-automatic handguns and went in search of the person they allegedly believed was breaking in. Colonacosta found a car parked nearby that the report says had dark tinted windows. According to Judd, a woman was sitting inside the car checking her cell phone when Colonacosta pointed the gun at her and demanded she get out of the car.

“She thinks, ‘He’s about to carjack me. He’s going to rob me,’” said Judd.

Judd said the woman tried to drive away, and both Colonacosta and his son fired at her car.

“They shot at her seven times,” said Judd. “During our investigation, we learned that one of the bullets, even though it didn’t hit her, went through the baby’s car seat and lodged in the driver’s seat of the car. Our victim was that close to death.”

The arrest report says the woman was able to get away and call for help.

“In Florida, we have a wonderful Castle Doctrine law. We have a wonderful Stand Your Ground law. That doesn’t mean you can go search people out and shoot them. That’s what they did,” said Judd.

Judd said Colonacosta and his son have no previous criminal record but now face charges including possession of firearms by a minor under 18 and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
