A man has died after he was dragged onto the subway tracks in Manhattan and hit by another train Monday afternoon, officials say.
Police say the incident happened just after 5 p.m. at the 59th Street-Columbus Circle station.
The victim was rushing to catch a southbound 1 or 2 train when his clothes got stuck between the doors, according to authorities. He was then dragged to the tracks where he was hit by another train.
Police say the victim was a 20-year-old man.
MTA President Richard Davey released a statement Monday night saying it appears to have been an accident that did not involve criminal activity.
“While the investigation is in its earliest stages, it appears this was a terrible accident that did not involve criminal activity,” Davey said in a statement. “A person on the tracks was hit by a train and our thoughts are with his family, the train operator and riders who witnessed this tragedy. We will get to the cause and learn any lessons that may emerge as there is no higher priority than safety.”
1, 2 and 3 trains experienced extensive delays in both directions while emergency teams responded to the incident, NYC Transit said Monday.
