BUFFALO, N.Y. — You can check out a new mural honoring a famous abolitionist in Buffalo's Broderick Park.
The piece, called "The Road to Freedom," pays tribute to Harriet Tubman and her journey leading enslaved people up north along the Underground Railroad.
The artist behind the mural, Gino Morrow II, is a Buffalo native. He says he began creating the mural as a way to show the essence of Tubman's journey.
"How do you tell that story in a picture, that static, without giving details of everything that everyone has already said about Harriet,” Morrow II said. “The lightning bolt was actually the last component, because I had a beautiful image of Harriet with a butterfly in the foreground, yet it still seemed the story was not yet complete."
Morrow was one of two artists selected to create a memorial at the park, as part of a $400,000 public art initiative.
