HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — The homeless population continues to increase in the Tampa Bay area, particularly in Hillsborough County.

The homeless numbers also have increased across Florida.

According to the Florida Council on Homelessness Annual 2022 report, there’s a more than 50 percent increase in unsheltered homeless people in Hillsborough from 2021-2022.

Henry Delarosa and his wife Kerry are among them.

Delarosa, who lives in a tent in Hillsborough County, had a rough day Thursday while dealing with the severe storms that swept across the area.

It’s not the first time weather has stormed through his tent.

“Yeah, we have been flooded in and the whole tent was flooded in,” he said.

The tent is all he and Kerry have.

The two are homeless and have been living on and off the streets and at campsites in Hillsborough County for the last year.

This week, they are camping at E.G. Simmons Conservation Park for $24 a night.

“Most of the places are really good,” he said. “You feel more secure when you are here. There is a gate and most the people are actually paying and you can actually sleep really well instead of us being on the streets.”

The two will have stayed a maximum of two weeks, so they are looking for another spot.

“We are trying to go to Lithia, any other campsite close to a bus stop and work,” he said.

Kerry is unemployed, but Henry said he’s starting a new job at Taco Bell as a crew manager.

According to the Tampa Hillsborough Homeless Initiative, there were more than 1,500 homeless people in Hillsborough County in 2022, it’s a 4.2% increase from 2020.

The group’s research has found the increased costs of housing contribute to the growing number.

The Florida Council on Homelessness sent a letter in June to Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office asking for more funding toward affordable housing to help get the homeless population off the streets and into homes.

Meanwhile, as Delarosa ate a warm meal and avoided the storms Thursday, he said he was grateful for what he did have, mainly his wife.

“We make it the way we want,” he said. “It’s the best way we can make it, you know?”
