TAMPA, Fla. — Jan. 2 is expected to be one of Tampa International Airport’s busiest travel days, but for the most part, flights are taking off as scheduled as airlines are working to get rebooked passengers to their destinations.
Each day during the holiday travel period, the airport had anywhere from 65,000-70,000 people pass through the airport. On peak days, that number hit closer to 80,000.
But officials at the airport confirmed that more than 720 flights have been canceled since Christmas Eve.
On Monday morning, roughly 50 unclaimed bags remained at the Southwest Airlines baggage claim area. It’s a huge improvement from the well-over 1,000 stranded bags that were lined up outside of the airline’s baggage office one week ago.
People like Jessica Marosi helped airlines get misplaced luggage back to their owners. She’s a driver for Roadie, an app that connects drivers with lost luggage so they can help reunite passengers and their bags.
At the peak of Southwest’s flight issues last week, Marosi said she was delivering anywhere from 20 to 35 bags a day.
“It definitely helps me feel good,” she said. “It also makes me feel good that people are getting their stuff back.”
The last couple of days she’s only had to deliver a bag or two a day, Marosi said — further proof that the airlines are getting back on track.
