PLANT CITY, Fla. — The Taqueria Hernandez food truck has been serving Mexican food in Plant City for years. But after several months of being closed, two sisters are reviving the food truck for one reason.
Daniela and Elizabel Hernandez grew up helping their parents at their food truck, making Mexican dishes such as tortas, quesadillas, burritos and chicharrones preparados.
Elizabel says her mother wanted to share her favorite Mexican dishes with the community.
“We also just helped in anything and everything, and I guess that’s how we learned how to just follow her footsteps, follow everything she did," she said.
Their mother’s dream was put on pause when she was diagnosed with liver cancer. She passed away in January 2022.
Daniela recalls who her mother was before her diagnoses. “She was the type of person that didn’t like to plan very ahead — life happens, things happen, she was living day by day.”
It’s why they are more determined than ever to continue what she started.
“I just want to make her proud and I know she’s watching over us,” said Daniela.
Their mom’s business initially got off the ground with the family going door to door selling food.
It would later become the Taqueria Hernandez food truck that many people in Plant City have grown to know and love.
What Daniela shared what she loves the most about continuing her mother’s dream of owning a food truck.
“I like to hear what they tell me about my mom. I know some people really like going to my mom to just talk about their life, they really confided in my mom.”
As the sisters create a set schedule for the food truck they hope to take their mothers dream even further, by opening up a restaurant in their mothers name in the future.
For now the Hernandez sisters are located at the Oytis M. Andrews Sports Complex in Plant City every Saturday.
