TAMPA, Fla. — While many parents limit screen time for their kids, one retired Hillsborough County math teacher may provide a reason to reconsider — at least if their children are watching her YouTube channel.
Marcia Silberman, who taught in a classroom for 30, launched her own channel to share her passion for math with students around the world.
Her current classroom looks a lot different from her days in the classroom — she has a light up board and her phone’s camera, and she says that’s all she needs.
“I’m getting ready to make a video for my YouTube channel," Marcia said." I have my phone that is going to tape my video that I will go ahead and make."
Marcia says after retiring from teaching, she started a tutoring business, and it was actually her students who inspired her “Math with Marcia” YouTube channel.
“My students would say to me, 'You explain things so easily, can you make a video for me?" Because I would see them once or twice a week, and that’s where my light bulb lit up, and I thought, 'Why not YouTube?'" she said.
That was about two months ago, and since then, her channel has gained more than 2,000 subscribers, including students from all over the world. While this is a different teaching method, Marcia says this is what being an educator is all about.
Now, Marcia continues helping her students, all 2,000 of them, learn and improve their math skills.
“After 33 years of teaching, it became where — and I think that’s why I love teaching so much — I just changed all the time," she said. "I changed with the times. I improved myself.”
