UVALDE, Texas — Two families with children who survived the mass shooting that took place at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, on May 24, 2022, have filed a lawsuit against multiple agencies.
The suit was filed by the families of Mayah Zamora, who was in the hospital for more than 60 days while recovering from multiple bullet wounds, and Khloie Torres, who was also shot and was on the phone with 911 during the shooting.
The lawsuit names multiple agencies as defendants, including the City of Uvalde, Uvalde County, Uvaclde CISD, the companies that manufactured and sold the gun used in the shooting and law enforcement tasked with responding to the shooting. In addition, the suit lays out in graphic detail how the tragedy unraveled, demonstrating the role each agency played in mishandling the shooting.
The suit details the physical and physiological distress the families as well as the survivors suffered and are suffering, incurred by the failure of the defendants to act responsibly. Both Mayah and Khloie suffer from PTSD.
This lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court, Western District of Texas, Austin Division. The families of the survivors demand a trial by jury.
The shooting claimed the lives of 19 children and two teachers. It has prompted a number of firearm safety bills during the current session of the Texas Legislature. Investigations into the shooting and law enforcement's response to it are ongoing.
