HONOLULU — Zach’s Ride for Safe Streets, organized by the Hawaii Bicycling League, returns March 4. Riders will gather at Kakaako Waterfront Park at 9:30 a.m., and the ride starts at 10 a.m.
The ride honors Zachary Manago, an 18-year-old who was an avid cyclist. The Moanalua High School graduate and Hawaii Pacific University student was killed by a hit and run drunk driver on Kamehameha Highway in Wahiawa in Dec. 2010. While at HPU, Manago wrote a paper about the need for more bicycle lanes in Hawaii. In July 2011, more than 100 cyclists rode out in honor of Manago in the first Zachary Manago’s Ride in Paradise, with the purpose of bringing attention to the need for safer roads for cyclists and pedestrians.
Riders of all abilities are encouraged to take part in the short ride that will follow a route with protected bike lanes on Ward Avenue and King Street to the state capitol, where there will be a rally at 11 a.m. The ride will then continue back to Kakaako Waterfront Park via South King Street’s protected bike lane. A potluck will follow.
There is no fee to particpate, but cyclists are asked to register. For more information and to make donations, go to hbl.org/zachsride.
