ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A large pothole that comes and goes outside a busy shopping center in St. Petersburg is causing some problems for drivers.
For drivers going in and out of the busy Gateway Market Center off of MLK Street and 77th Avenue North, there are several things going on at once.
There are shoppers coming and going, a busy bus stop and passing traffic on 77th Avenue North.
Plus — there’s the pothole.
Even though it’s been recently temporarily repaired by city, neighbor Darius Underwood says it always comes back.
“What we got is just a large pothole here,” Underwood said. “The re-pavement has been great for the buses. But that pothole is just going to form again. And with the buses blocking, it really causes a lot of blind spots.”
He says once the rainy season comes around, he worries the pothole will be back.
As drivers try to turn and avoid it while exiting the shopping center, it makes it hard to see around the buses parked right there, creating a blind spot from oncoming traffic.
“We know that this pothole forms all of the time. So if I can avoid it, that’s the best-case scenario. But I can’t avoid it unless I know there’s no traffic coming behind me,” Underwood.
Spectrum News asked the the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) about the area around the bus stop.
Officials said they worked with the city of St. Petersburg to get the pothole fixed, but it is just a temporary repair.
PSTA also added a stop bar to keep buses back to help drivers see around the parked buses.
But Underwood worries that if the pothole comes back, it will create the same problems again.
“It’s an area that says disaster,” Underwood said. “The bus drivers are just doing their job, but I worry about the pedestrians.”
Spectrum News also reached out to the city to see if a full repair of the road is possible, but they did not respond.
PSTA added that potholes are an issue there with all the traffic from the buses and the shopping center.
