The Rays hit 10 consecutive wins Monday after beating the Boston Red Sox at home 1-0. The longest winning streak to start an MLB season is 13, set by the 1987 Brewers and 1982 Braves. The Rays are the seventh team since 1901 to begin the year with 10 or more wins.
With hopes high for the season, fans say that could translate into more support at Tropicana Field.
“It’s my first in a really long time,” said Rays fan Austin Pedro.
Pedro brought his son to his first baseball game as a birthday present, but says the win streak certainly played a role in buying the tickets.
Despite the Rays season-opening win streak, getting fans in seats has still been challenging, with the team fifth from the bottom of the MLB in attendance average.
Monday night's attendance was 13,470.
Bryan Grant has been a Rays fan since moving to the Tampa area in 2000.
“Right now, it seems like they are going to go all the way,” Grant said. “Last year they had a few heartbreaks with injuries and stuff like that, and this year they are all healthy.”
If the Rays sweep Boston at home this week, the team will have a chance to set the new record Friday night, at home, against the Toronto Blue Jays.
