Two Florida men have researched, collected and assembled a collection of historic photographs from around their home state.

What You Need To Know

  • Mike McGinness and Jeff Davies run the popular Facebook group originally dubbed “Historic Florida”

  • Their book's photographs span the entire history of Florida and date back to the 1800s.

  • The book is available on Amazon, at Barnes & Noble and some independent bookstores.

They released that collection in a new book called “Florida: A History In Pictures.”

Mike McGinness and Jeff Davies are no stranger to old pictures. Together, they run the popular Facebook group originally dubbed “Historic Florida,” which boasts more than 200,000 members.

Then, spurred on by a publisher’s interest, they embarked on the book project “to bring our love of history to our members and other people,” McGinness said.

The photographs span the entire history of Florida and date back to the 1800s. About one-third of the photographs come from member contributions, McGinness and Davies said. The other two-thirds of the pictures come from historical societies, universities, libraries, the Internet and public domain.

Numerous photos come from the Tampa Bay area, including an early version of the St. Petersburg Pier and the Gasparilla celebration.

(They’re) living history,” Davis said about the pictures, describing why he found them fascinating. “It’s something that will be here long after us, especially in the digital age.”

“I feel like I’m leaving a legacy,” McGinness said. “Maybe 100 years from now, one of my ancestors will pick up a copy of the book somehow.”

The book is available on Amazon, at Barnes & Noble and some independent bookstores.
