PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — It is estimated that Florida will have 10,230 lung cancer deaths and 19,340 new cases in 2023, according to the American Cancer Society, which is more than any other state.

Many plan to wear the color turquoise and communities will even light up in the color as part of the American Lung Association LUNG FORCE's Turquoise Takeover and Lung Cancer Action Week, which takes place from May 8 to May 14.

The goal is to help raise awareness of the leading cancer killer and to celebrate survivors.

Carrie Deaner, 47, is one of those survivors. She says early detection was key.

The diagnosis in 2022 came as a surprise for the personal trainer.

“When my friends and family heard that this was a possibility in my body, they were very shocked because I try to keep my nutrition and fitness on point, so it was something that no one would ever assume could possibly be the issue,” said Deaner.

She said she knew something wasn’t right with her body and saw her doctor.

“A test isn’t going to hurt you, but the other result definitely could be worse in the long run,” said Deaner.

Her surgery in February 2022 was successful.

“I feel amazing,” said Deaner. “The first year was a struggle. There was a lot of pain from the healing, but just knowing that I’m alive to feel that pain was well worth it.”

The fitness enthusiast was excited to get back to working out and training clients at Powerhouse Gym Trinity, where she connects with her clients and celebrates their progress.

“The non-scale victories, as we call them, where they just feel so much better and happy and thankful that they even started their journey,” said Deaner.

As Deaner shares her own journey, she hopes it inspires people to listen to their bodies.

“Every day is a dream, just live it,” said Deaner, who has a lot to look forward to in life.

Deaner is planning a wedding and will continue advocating for the American Lung Association by participating in a variety of fundraisers, including the Fight For Air Climb and Lip Sync for Lungs.

There are several ways to take action during Turquoise Takeover and Lung Cancer Action Week, which include getting screened, getting your home tested for radon and learning the warning signs. Find information about lung health and diseases.
