POLK COUNTY, Fla. — The body of a male baby was found early Thursday in a Lakeland dumpster.
According to Lakeland Police Chief Sam Taylor, the child’s body was found in a bag by a man going through the trash in the dumpster behind Just Move Gym in the 3600 block of south Florida Ave.
During a news conference Thursday morning. Taylor said the infant boy was found with the placenta and umbilical cord still attached.
Officers responded with fire rescue personnel, but the child was declared dead at the scene.
The medical examiners office is performing an autopsy and detectives are investigating. Taylor said any charges being filed would depend on the result of the autopsy.
Taylor also said multiple Safe Havens were in the vicinity, where a person or persons can drop off a newborn child.
“Anyone who is pregnant and feels like they can’t take care of the child and wants to drop the child off at a fire station, police department, emergency room can do so with no questions asked,” he said. “Sad thing about it is just down the street is an emergency room and ambulance station.”
