POLK COUNTY, Fla. — Drivers on State Road 60 in Polk County have some safety concerns after last week’s deadly crash near Mulberry.
Two people were killed in that crash and several seriously injured, including a Bartow High School student. It happened on SR-60 and Pine Grove Rd in the Willow Oak area last Tuesday morning.
Neighbor Lindsay Fryar reached out to Spectrum News when she heard the crash happen from her home, a sound she says she’s heard before.
“My heart feels like it’s dropping out. Because it could be one of our kids,” Fryar said. “Every time we hear helicopters, the first thing that we do is start picking up the phone and checking on everybody, calling each other.”
Fryar is hoping to see some changes there. She feels one of the issues there is entering and exiting SR-60 at busy intersections that don’t have traffic lights, like at Turner Road, near where the crash happened.
“At the main turns, like Turner or Bailey, just put a couple of stop lights in to slow people down and make people a little more conscious of the turns,” Fryar said.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a news conference on the day of the crash that the setup of the road was not to blame.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office arrested Elmer Bryan Giron-Canil, 24,
They say he does not have a drivers license and was not in the country legally. He has been charged with negligently operating a vehicle causing injury or death and driving without a license.
In an email, FDOT spokesperson Adam Rose said teams will evaluate the intersection once the investigation is finished.
FDOT does have safety improvement project in the works listed on its website on SR-60 in Bartow.
Fryar hopes 60 in Willow Oak will be considered as well.
“How many more people have to die before something gets done?” Fryar asked. “Before somebody sees that there’s a problem.”
