Construction is wrapping up at the new-and-improved Coachman Park in Clearwater. The finishing touches are being put on the state-of-the-art waterfront facility.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Mayor Brian Aungst, Sr. “It’s phenomenal, and I really do think people are going to gravitate here.”

“It’s a game changer. It’s a catalytic project that’s going to spur more activity downtown, which we need and we’re already seeing,” said Aungst.

Catherine Corcoran started with the City of Clearwater 10 years ago as in intern. She’s now overseeing the project as the Senior Landscape Architect.

The new concert venue called “The Sound” can seat 4,000 guests under the canopy, and up to 5,000 more on the lawn.

“Having that between four and nine-thousand capacity offers artists an opportunity to have a medium-sized show which right now is very difficult to host,” said Corcoran.

The Sound will be host to more than concerts.

“The chairs are removable, specifically so we can have flexible use of this space,” said Corcoran. “We can do things like yoga on the lawn or an art show when there’s not an event happening here.”

A variety of events to help revitalize what some call a sleepy downtown.

“The entire point of this is to activate our downtown space,” stressed Corcoran. “We know that a lot of people are hesitant to come here, so they need a destination, they need to know there is something to do the city. Is providing that for them.”

A space providing something for everyone, with or without a concert ticket. Family fun can be found at the playground, splash pad and picnic pavilions.

Creatives can admire pieces from local artists celebrating art and diversity.

Corcoran is excited to see the spaces come to life.

“I just see opportunity, I see flexibly, I see visions of people having fun, coming out here with their families and creating lasting memories,” said Corcoran.

“That’s the best part. Seeing these come to life physically is one thing, but watching them activated with people who are enjoying the space as we intended, that’s the most rewarding part of my job,” she said.
