TAMPA, Fla. — With a lot of drivers hitting the roads for the holiday, it can lead to some frustration in the car.

  • By law, a driver is required to turn on their signal 100 feet prior to making a change in direction

Some drivers get especially frustrated when others don’t use their turn signals.

Tampa native Joan Park reached out to Spectrum Bay News 9 about this, wondering why so many drivers don’t use them.

“I just see people who are not using their signals like they should. It impedes traffic because you don’t know what the other person is going to do,” Park said.

She notices it often driving around the area. It can especially be an issue at the growing number of 4-way stops being added around Tampa Bay.

“It’s nice to know if someone is going straight or turning. Sometimes they will let you know and sometimes they won’t,” Park said.

Park was wondering if the state or law enforcement have ever tried a campaign to remind drivers to use their signals.

In an email, Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Public Information Officer Kris Carson says the agency is currently focused on their Target Zero initiative, which aims to reduce traffic fatalities.

Agencies like Florida Highway Patrol are part of that, enforcing violations like speeding or aggressive driving.

In the state of Florida, drivers can get a ticket for not signaling. By law, a driver is required to turn on their signal 100 feet prior to making a change in direction. It can be punishable as a moving violation, which can include points and a fine.

Park understands it can be easy to forget or get distracted, but she feels a reminder would help.

“I would like to remind everybody,” Park said. “Using your signal does help the traffic immensely if you let people know behind you and in front of you, what you plan to do.”
