In a release, TPD said, "Officers were involved in a use of deadly force that left an armed suspect dead. No officers were injured."

According to police, the suspect, 33 years old, stabbed the mother of his children, who were between the ages of 2 and 6.

The woman is being treated at a local hospital. The suspect's name has not been released yet.

The man also is believed by police to have stolen his brother's AK-47 rifle, which he later pointed at officers.

He was stopped in an eventual traffic pursuit, which is when the shooting by police occurred.

Sabrina Turner ended up being a witness to what was happening. She told Spectrum News she was driving on North Florida Avenue and noticed police activity. She continued on her way to St. Joseph's Hospital, where she works as a nurse.

She found herself in the middle of a shootout.

"I thought I was going to die," she said. "I was actually on the phone with my boyfriend when it first happened, and I was just screaming, 'I'm gonna die. They're shooting, they're shooting.'"

Turner said her car was sandwiched between the vehicles. She said she saw the man get out of his car and that she heard gunshots shortly after.

"Shots were being fired over my car. I just tried to duck for cover as low as I could get in my car," she said, adding that in the middle of the gunfire, her car door opened. A Tampa police officer got her out of the car and harm's way.

She said she is gratetful for the officers who responded.

"They put their lives in jeopardy and in danger and came from behind cover to make sure that they got me out of that situation to a safe place, and I'm forever grateful to them," she said.

The FDLE is leading the investigation.

Tampa police said updates, "including body-worn camera footage, will be disseminated as soon as the investigation allows."
