NORTH SARASOTA, Fla. — Veterans who qualify can get free services at a new facility that helps seniors, especially those with memory disorders.
Town Square University Parkway opened in March and was recently selected by the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs to offer free adult day care services to those who qualify.

The adult day care facility is set in the 1950s and focuses on reminiscence therapy.
"When they come in here it kind of brings them back in time,” said Denise Gibson, who is program director at Town Square. “Where some people have lost that short-term memory and we can tap into those later memories and that’s what we hope to do."
Programs include: medication management, meals, socialization, activities and outreach and support services.
Ninety-two-year-old Ken Wieland, Sr. has been participating in the adult day care since March.
“Makes a great day,” said Wieland.
The Marine veteran served 30 years in the military as a Skyraider pilot. After leaving the military, he taught school in Sarasota.
Wieland spends weekdays at Town Square, where he enjoys socializing and participating in numerous activities.
The longtime pianist also plays for other members.
Wieland’s family and caretakers can also participate in support groups and other programs focusing on them.
