PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Nancy McGreevy taught in Pinellas County for 25 years before she retired a few years ago and became the director at Palm Harbor Creative Learning Academy.
She says she's a teacher at heart, but wasn’t always in the classroom.
“Children are my passion. They’re just my passion," she said. "And I didn’t start out teaching — I started out as a computer programmer for the Chrysler Corporation."
McGreevy said when her 1-year-old son was diagnosed with diabetes, she decided to become a teacher because she was having a hard time finding care for him and felt getting involved in early childhood education was the best decision for her family.
“I also have a passion for children that have special needs," she said. "I advocate for them. They have to have a place to go."
McGreevy continues to do that in her role as director. While she isn’t teaching, she is very involved in what’s happening in each classroom at the school.
“I just love coming to work every day," she said. "My teachers do too. And that’s the key — my staff is key."
McGreevy said she can’t imagine not being involved in early childhood education.
“Every day is a gift and you never know what you’re going to get when you unwrap that gift," she said. "It’s the smiles, the joys, the memories that we make for them."
