ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Debris pick up is underway in St. Petersburg after Hurricane Idalia swept through the Gulf of Mexico last week.
What You Need To Know
- Residents in St. Petersburg are cleaning up from Hurricane Idalia
- Debris pickup has begun and city officials want residents aware of a few guidelines, including no plastic bags
- Trucks rolled out Thursday to begin removing debris from areas that flooded from the storm
Trucks contracted by the city rolled out Thursday and will be removing debris from areas that flooded because of the storm.
City officials said they want residents to be aware of several guidelines: Debris should be sorted into piles by type, and plastic bags should not be used.
“FEMA prefers no bags whatsoever,” said Mike Jefferis, the city’s Community Enrichment Administrator. “The motive with the bags is to make sure the contractor and FEMA know exactly what’s being picked up from the property.”
Debris trucks rolling into Shore Acres this morning…pick up has started! Put your debris on curb if you are ready for removal. Make sure to separate it by type (construction debris, appliances etc) and don’t use plastic bags! #HurricaneIdalia @StPeteFL @BN9 pic.twitter.com/mKiv0pYW8K

The city expects to be reimbursed by FEMA for the work, which will continue as long as there’s a need.
