RIVERVIEW, Fla. -- Riverview resident Carl Derry is not letting any moment pass him by when it comes to thrill-seeking.

His story is truly one that says you should seize the day or at least any opportunity for fun.

What You Need To Know

  • Carl Derry from Riverview is training for his next adventure, Machu Picchu in Peru

  • This summer he went Wing walking on top of an airplane

  • Every time an opportunity for adventure comes up, Carl takes advantage

Carl is up for anything.

He is now training for his next adventure by getting in a few miles in biking.

“Machu Picchu is a lot of hiking, a lot of walking in thin air,” Carl explained. “So, I figure get the trusty old bike out and get some cardio in.”

He recently took a peaceful ride through Pebble Park in Riverview.

His most recent stunt, however, is not for the faint of heart.

“This past summer I decided to go over to England to go Wing walking,” he said. “You’re not actually walking on the wing of an airplane, but you are actually standing on top of it.”

Carl told us about what can only be described as a hair-raising experience.

“You are strapped to a pole, and you take off and land an antique Stearman biplane,” he said. “You literally have nothing in front of you. You have the full force of the air. We did two loop the loops, two stalls and three barrel rolls.”

Carl, who is 69, has spent a better part of his life adventuring.

The big thrills started with a biking vacation to South Africa that took him across the country, with add-ons, like trading a bike for an ostrich.

“I went like, Okay!!! It was like being in the rodeo on a bucking bronco, but it had feathers instead of hair,” he said.

That trip included him trying the Guinness World Record’s highest bungee jump.

“Never say no,” Carl said about trying out new and exciting things. “You know, whenever I have an opportunity to try something, take a deep breath and go for it.”

Biking is a bit of a common theme for his adventures, such as the time he rode 500 miles through Alaska.

He camped along the way for about a week with thousands of others helping to raise funds for AIDS vaccine research.

He is now planning his next picture-perfect moment in Peru.

He said he does not know for sure what he will get into when he is in his adventure but has advice to others thinking about taking such a trip.

“You know, I suppose wrestling an alligator, I’m not going to do that one,” he said. “But you know in all of these opportunities I had, they’re well curated, tour guides, adventure guides have gone before me...so do it.”

He wants to show people, you can lead a really thrilling life at any stage in life.
