LAKE WALES, Fla. — A 17-vehicle crash left three people seriously injured and thwarted traffic for hours Thursday evening on Highway 27 in Lake Wales.

Highway 27 at Chalet Suzanne Road has since reopened to traffic after the multi-vehicle crash. It happened just after 6:30 p.m. with multiple people injured and three flown by helicopter to area hospitals.

Lake Wales police said a car was northbound on Highway 27 when the driver attempted to make a left hand turn in front of a semi-truck.

The two collided, sending the semi-truck across the median and into northbound traffic.

Investigators said the tractor trailer then hit 16 cars sitting at the stop light on the northbound side of Highway 27.

Police have not described the extent of injuries in the accident, but as of now, there are no indications this was a fatal accident.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
