TAMPA, Fla. — The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is conducting a death investigation at Farnell Middle School.
According to officials, the incident is not related to the school or any students and there was no danger at any point on campus, located on Nine Eagles Drive near the Westchase community.
Authorities were notified at 8:30 a.m. Friday about a dead man on the school campus. A tarp was later seen near the car rider area. The man took his own life, Sheriff Chad Chronister said.
“He gets in the early drop off line," Chronister said. "It would throw up no red flags because everyone is dropping off kids at this point.
"He starts walking towards the rear of the campus where the entry is for the Early Start Program. He stops, pulls out a firearm and with a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head he takes his own life.”
Chronister said it was a case of a "disgruntled ex-husband" of a member of the school’s faculty.
“We believe that his ex-wife works here," the sheriff said. "He’s a disgruntled divorced husband and maybe this was his last act of defiance. He wanted to come and prove a point to his wife or his ex-wife who’s a school teacher, who’s a faculty member, who starts work here.”
Investigators confirmed that two students saw the incident and are in grief counseling. Thirty-four students were in the school at the time for an Early Care Program.
“I’m saddened, I’m angered that somebody would take their own life. I’m angered and even more so that they would come onto a student campus where our children are and traumatize these children," Chronister said.
The school day was ended early and students were released to their parents or put on buses.
