ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The St. Petersburg Housing Authority on Friday unveiled The Legacy at Jordan Park, and the sentiment, for some, was that's been a long time coming.

Jordan Park is the oldest public housing site in St. Pete, and now it's officially back open. The facility is a brand new sixty-unit senior building, along with the completion of its surrounding family units.

For many residents, new and old, it’s a relief to be in a place they’ll call their forever home. That’s the case for one resident.

With the biggest smile on her face and her favorite glasses, Lucy Shorter couldn’t be happier as she takes a stroll to her room.

“I was glad to be back because I wasn’t happy where I was living, so it’s gotten scary, but this is nice,” Shorter said.

She is one of the few residents at the Legacy at Jordan Park to move back in. Having lived there for five years before the renovations, Shorter was excited to see her new place.

“It’s a nice place to live and the rules are really good, no smoking, no loud talking, no loud music,” she said.

It’s a place she can navigate easily. Of course, she’s got a lot of unpacking still left to do. But she said it beats living elsewhere.

“Where I was living, I couldn’t afford to live there, so I had to move, and I put in an application there and I was accepted,” she said.

The new place features a three-story building, and appliances including a washer and dryer in each unit. There’s also a pickle ball court and a shaded walking path.

Although it will take some time to settle in, Shorter says, she’s looking forward to the new memories she’ll create in her new home.

As for when she’ll expect visitors, she said, “I’ll get it together in about a week or so.”

This won’t be the last redevelopment project. According to the St. Pete Housing Authority, future sites are already being considered.

The new state-of-the-art senior complex features units with hurricane impact windows, a backup generator to help in a power outage and much more.
