TAMPA, Fla. — The University of Tampa (UT) and Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) are facing investigations by the U.S. Department of Education over alleged discrimination incidents.
The U.S. Department of Education has been keeping a close eye on campuses as tension heats up in the Israel-Hamas war.
The development follows last week’s announcement that the U.S. Department of Education was investigating six high-profile universities over complaints of antisemitism and Islamophobia.
HCPS was added to that growing list on Tuesday, and UT was added on Monday.
K-12 schools and colleges and universities could risk losing federal funding if they don’t comply with the U.S. Department of Education’s recommendations following its investigation.
Spectrum Bay News 9 reached out to the U.S. Department of Education, which said it would not comment on open investigations.
UT provided the following statement on Tuesday:
“Yesterday, The University of Tampa was made aware of a Department of Education request for information. This request stems from an incident that occurred in September, which was addressed by the University. This occurred prior to the recent Israel-Hamas hostilities. The University is fully cooperating with the request for information, but cannot comment further due to student privacy laws.”
