TAMPA, Fla. — The Central Florida region experienced one of the driest fall seasons in years, prompting the Southwest Florida Water Management District to restrict how often residents can water their homes.

What You Need To Know

  • An unuusually dry season is leading to potential water shortages

  • Some areas are restricting when homeowners can water their lawns

  • Other tips for saving water involved using efficient appliances

Along with those guidelines, there are other things you can do to conserve water at home.

“My job really focuses on conservation outreach and then our youth education,” said Katherine Munson, Education Coordinator for the district. “So I get to talk with folks and make sure they know resources that are out there to help reduce water use.”

Munson recommends a commonsense approach when doing chores like hand washing the dishes. That means turning off the water rather than letting it run in between each dish you clean. If you are upgrading appliances and fixtures, Munson suggested Energy Star and WaterSense products.

Also, if you have an outdoor irrigation system, be sure to fix all sprinkler heads and program it according to your designated watering day.

“Following these restrictions and making sure you’re applying just what your lawn needs is really important to have your landscape thrive and also to help conserve water,” said Munson.
