TAMPA, Fla. — UPDATE: The Tampa City Council is expected to receive a reimbursement resolution on Jan. 25, providing funding for upgrades made to Tampa Fire Stations 6, 9 and 10 as well as funding for a new fire station in North Tampa and a new maintenance and supply facility.

Tampa Firefighter’s Union President Nick Stocco said growth has outpaced Tampa Fire Department and now stations in some parts of the city are struggling to keep response times low.

What You Need To Know

  • City Council to be presented reimbursement resolution for Tampa Fire Rescue

  • Resolution includes funding for upgrades to stations 6, 9 and 10

  • Funding included for a new fire station in North Tampa

  • Resolution would also approve a relocation and upgrade of Tampa Fire Department's Maintenance and Supply Facility

“Whenever there are calls of service and the units aren’t able to respond to additional calls, if there are other calls of service within their territory, other units, other stations and other ambulances need to respond in those areas,” said Stocco. “That equates to longer response times because they are having to go outside their territory to respond to those calls.”

In recent years, Tampa Fire has created what it calls peak units.

Those units are assigned to high-traffic areas of the city during peak call times to help assist when multiple calls are active.

If the council approves Thursday’s reimbursement resolution, Tampa Fire officials said they hope to have a new fire station online in North Tampa in one to two years.
