PLANT CITY, Fla. — One Plant City resident says she is hoping for safety improvements at a busy intersection in her neighborhood.

Crystal Dixon says the intersection of Sam Allen and Park roads is dangerous, mainly because it doesn’t have a traffic light.

  • She said she has seen many crashes and close calls there

  • Hillsborough County officials say a housing developer will be installing a traffic light at the intersection

“It’s nerve-racking going through that intersection,” she said. “I dread it. But that’s the way we have to go to get into town.”

Dixon said she’s seen many crashes there.

In fact, her daughter caught some video on a dash camera of a near-miss that happened in front of her.

“It’s often," Dixon said. "Sadly, too often.”

Dixon said the problem is that the intersection only has stop signs for drivers looking to turn from Park Road onto Sam Allen Road.

“They’re not even stopping half the time,” she said. “They’re just shooting straight across. We’ve seen several close calls and actual accidents.”

She said the area is now busier than ever, as more people move to the area.

In fact, several new homes are being built near the intersection.

“I’m just very concerned with all the new homes being built in the area, that it’s just going to get more dangerous,” Dixon said.

Hillsborough County officials said improvements to the intersection are coming, as a housing project developer is expected to install a traffic light there.

In addition, Plant City officials say they are considering making the intersection a four-way stop until the traffic light is added.

While no timelines were available for the installation of the traffic light or four-way stop, Dixon said she hopes something is done soon.

“It needs to be developed better, planned better,” Dixon said. “There are so many people moving into this area. It’s just bound to have more accidents.”
