PORT RICHEY, Fla. — Multiple fire units remained at the scene of a brush fire Thursday evening in the Port Richey area that officials said is 100 percent contained.

Florida Forest Service and Port Richey Fire responded to calls around 8 p.m. Wednesday about flames near the Avila Bay Townhomes and Pelican Bay apartments near Old Post Road.

Pasco County Fire Rescue crews also responded.

Authorities said about 20 acres initially were burning. By Thursday afternoon, the situation was "100 percent contained."

The scene brought several residents out of their home to see what was going on.

“In the 25 years that I’ve been here, this is the biggest fire we’ve had in these woods," said Tom Looks, who lives at Royal Richey Condominiums. "There was an occasional little one here and there, but this is the first time the whole woods almost went down.

There were no evacuation orders.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials said it could have stemmed from a campfire.

Officials said they expect crews to remain at the scene throughout the day and perhaps into Thursday night.

“I don’t see any overnight crews, I mean it’s pretty much done what it’s going to do," said Brian Prill, Forest Area Supervisor for Pasco & Western Hernando County, Florida Forest Service. "We’re just trying to - at this point - eliminate some of the smoke as best we can in areas we can get to.”
