BRADENTON, Fla. — A Manatee County Sheriff’s deputy is recovering after being shot early Friday by a man trying to break into a nursing home facility.

According to Manatee County Sheriff Rick Wells, the deputy was shot in the arm by a suspect who was taken into custody after firing multiple shots at a nursing home employee, deputies and into windows at the building.

  • Manatee Sheriff Rick Wells said the suspect Sean Francis Calcutti is facing several charges

"This is the man that tried to kill one of my deputies," Wells said while showing a photo of Sean Francis Calcutti. "This is a man who tried to kill an innocent civilian inside this nursing home."

The incident happened at the Aspire at Palma Sola Bay nursing home at 6300 Cortez Road.

The first calls came in around 3:25 a.m. when officials said Calcutti crashed his car into the nursing home building.

When an employee confronted him outside, Calcutti fired but missed, Wells said. The employee locked the door, keeping Calcutti out.

"He had the training necessary I would think in place inside that facility," the sheriff said of the employee. "He knew what to do and even though he had just been shot at, he was able to lock those doors. And by doing that he protected those 90 residents."

Calcutti then went to the side of the building and fired numerous shots into windows, Wells said.

"We don’t believe that he has any connection to that nursing home," Wells said. "We have not found any relative or anyone related to him or anyone he even knows. So that’s one of the mysteries that we are trying to figure out, why he chose this nursing home."

Deputies arrived a short time later, and when they approached Calcutti, he fired at them, striking a deputy in the arm. Deputies exchanged fire, Wells said.

Calcutti, who was not injured, was taken into custody about two hours after crashing his vehicle into the building.

Another deputy rendered aid to the injured deputy, ultimately driving him to an area hospital.

Calcutti, who authorities said has an extensive criminal record in Manatee County and New York state, is facing multiple charges of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, shooting into an occupied dwelling and armed burglary.

Authorities are still investigating and trying to determine why the suspect was at the building. Officials said he had no connection to the nursing home.

Wells praised his deputies for the outcome.

“I’m thankful for the quick actions of our deputies,” he said. “(Also) I talked to him at the hospital (injured deputy) and he is in great spirits.”
