LARGO, Fla. — A longtime Largo resident is hoping some changes can be made to a busy intersection, after she was struck by a car while walking in a crosswalk.
Susan Nellis only recently began walking unassisted again. She said it was a few days before Christmas when she was walking across East Bay Drive in Largo at Lake Avenue. While in the crosswalk with the signal activated, she says she was struck by an SUV and thrown into the road.
“I now have two rods and a metal plate with 16 screws,” she said, “and with the lack of coverage from motorists, I’m responsible for a lot of those bills. ”
Instead of spending the holiday with her family, Nellis says she spent nine days at the hospital and had three surgeries on her left leg.
Nellis says hopes changes can be made to the intersection to help alert drivers turning left onto East Bay Drive that pedestrians could be in the crosswalk.
Sidewalks in the area also don’t connect to the crosswalk in all spots, which means pedestrians have to walk in the road at times. That’s something else Nellis hopes can be fixed in the years to come.
Spectrum Bay News 9 spoke with a representative from FDOT regarding the intersection. The agency says they’re reviewing the possibility of mounting a ‘turning vehicles stop for pedestrians’ sign at the northbound approach and improving the lane markings.
Based on an examination of crash history, FDOT does not recommend any changes be made to the left turn signal.
