LUTZ, Fla. — A Lutz resident is concerned about drivers ignoring a four-way stop sign at a busy intersection in her neighborhood.
Terri Epperson lives right by Sunset Lane and Hanna Road. She often sees drivers pass the stop signs while she’s working outside.
“Most cars seem to just roll through it. But at least they slow down. But the ones that don’t see the stop sign, they just go straight through it,” Epperson said.
And that’s when crashes can happen, which Epperson says she has seen or heard many times since she moved in 5 years ago.
“I hear them coming super-fast. And then I look up. But I’m more worried about somebody in my family actually getting injured pulling out,” Epperson said.
Like many roadways in Hillsborough County, traffic has increased on Sunset Lane in recent years because of population growth. It’s become a well-used route between US 41 and Livingston Ave.
She says that there have been some attempts to fix the problem, including signs further up on Sunset, warning drivers of a stop sign ahead.
Hillsborough County officials confirmed those signs were added to provide advanced warning.
But Epperson feels more signage may be needed to keep drivers safe.
“I don’t know if there’s something we can do to make it more visible or light up or something to catch people’s attention when they’re distracted,” Epperson said.
Officials from public works also said they would now re-evaluate the intersection for potential adjustments. They will also alert the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office about violations at the intersection.
