RIVERVIEW, Fla. — Some parts of the Tampa Bay region saw as much as a foot for rain from Debby, the Alafia River in Hillsborough County flooded with all that extra rain.
A flood warning is still in effect as the river is expected to rise even more Tuesday night.
On the river bank in Valrico on Monday, residents were using canoes to get around, some were walking through the flood water.
The majority of homes along the 25-mile stretch of the river are built on stilts, so there have been no reports of major flood damage so far.
To put things into perspective — back in 2017, after Hurricane Irma, the river crest was just more than 21 feet.
For Tuesday, Spectrum Bay News 9 Weather Experts are expecting to see a crest of 14.9 feet: what would be considered minor flooding.
Even so, residents are prepared and are paying close attention to conditions as the water continues to rise.
“The ground is kind of giving in because of how soft it is, so we can’t drive down there anymore, so it’s a lot of water and the current is very strong,” said Emma Hinds, a Valrico resident.
Spectrum Bay News 9 Weather Experts said the Alafia River will likely rise some more though Tuesday night and then slowly fall back below flood stage by Saturday.
Until then, residents are hoping for a big dry out after a long weekend of rain and storm surge.
