“Our understanding is the first floor of basically every building in the city took on two to four feet of water,” said City Administrator Carley Lewis.

“We wanted to provide some comfort, in terms of air conditioning when you don’t have power. We’re also providing power to charge dying devices, laundry services, restrooms, hot showers, anything we can provide to our community that would help us get through this time together,” Lewis continued.

Located in the parking lot of South Pasadena City Hall, the free Comfort Station offers air-conditioned trailers and tents with a comprehensive suite of services, including a long line of washers and dryers to clean personal belongings contaminated by floodwaters.

“It was 95 degrees in my home, and I was just trying to gather all my wet clothes because I got three to four feet of water in my residence,” said South Pasadena resident Nancy Smith.

“We were just putting them in garbage bags and dragging them here. The comfort station is wonderful. We greatly appreciate the facilities, especially the laundry facilities,” Smith added.

At least 100 residents have utilized the Comfort Station since it opened on Saturday morning, and to help as many Pinellas County residents as possible with storm recovery efforts, the city is not limiting services to those with South Pasadena addresses, so identification is not required.

“We really want to meet the residents where they’re at and solve as many different issues as we can,” said Lewis.

“Residents are working in their homes to clear debris, and they don’t have running water or power. They’re coming here to just get a little bit of comfort and some relief as they try to take the first steps to get their lives back together,” Lewis continued.
