TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. — The home of Pinellas County Commission Chair Kathleen Peters is completely gutted due to damage from hurricanes Helene and Milton. While dealing with her own recovery, she continues to work to bring much needed resources to the county.
Peters has lived in Treasure Island for years, and now lives in the home once owned by her parents. During Hurricane Helene, flood waters poured into it and left water 3 feet deep.
“We’ve never flooded on this island before,” Peters said.
While dealing with her own recovery, her job hasn’t slowed down at all. She has spent time coordinating with state and federal agencies to bring in as many resources as possible for the recovery effort in Pinellas County.
“It’s not that I had to work, everybody has to work,” Peters said.
She most recently toured the hard-hit areas with President Joe Biden, and gave him a list of everything the county needs to get back on its feet.
Peters, like so many others, faces a long road to recovery. But she said she is optimistic that Treasure Island, Pinellas County and the state in general will get back to business sooner rather than later.
