TAMPA, Fla. — Lianet Valdes has worked at Forest Hills Elementary School for 25 years. She teaches fifth grade.

“I like the changes that you see happening throughout the year. Also, because I’ve been here so far, I have a good relationship with parents. I’ve taught several kids from the same family,” said Valdes.

What You Need To Know

For the eighth time last year, Valdes says she taught a former student’s child. She has high expectations for her students and makes sure they’re prepared for state testing.

“I have very high expectations, behaviorally and academics. And they just know that I expect them to do well,” said Valdes.

Valdes started a tradition about 10 years ago. She cooks her students breakfast on days when they have a big test.

“I started making grilled cheese or omelets — just a hot meal, and it just stuck and I’ve been doing it for that long,” said Valdes. “I tell them because I’m cooking for them, they need to do wonderful on their test.”

Valdes says she loves seeing her students succeed.

“It’s just so rewarding. I think it’s one of the most rewarding careers in the world, and it keeps me coming back every year,” she said.
