“I just think it’s simply time. We live in a country now where over half of Americans live in an area that has some form of adult use marijuana available," she says.

Trulieve is a cannabis company and has contributed millions of dollars to the “Smart and Safe Florida” political committee which is pushing for the passage of Amendment 3. If the amendment does pass, the company is ready to grow in the state where it already has more than 150 dispensaries. Rivers says it’s about expanding access to high quality and safe marijuana for consumers.

Amendment 3 would legalize marijuana for adults over the age of 21 and Rivers says the products are geared towards adults.

However, opponents argue this could expose children to marijuana, especially edibles and that the amendment is too vague. They also express concern about a potential increase in impaired drivers.

Supporters say it could be a great revenue source, its estimated it could generate between $195 million and $431 million in new tax revenue that could be used for public programs. They also say it will heavily regulate the products to make sure they are safe.

If Amendment 3 passes, there will be a six month wait before the measure takes effect. Rivers says the industry would be tightly regulated and procedures would be in place like checking ID’s making sure that only adults more than 21 have access.
