ORLANDO, Fla. — The Democratic candidate challenging Rick Scott for his senate seat is making stops all over the state in the last week before election day.
While Scott is answering questions about remarks made in a Trump campaign about Puerto Rico, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is facing an accusation by Scott about an early voting social media post.
While early voting in Miami over the weekend, Mucarsel-Powell posted a video on social media that Scott claims violated election laws because it was at a polling place. He claims that the post was taken down after his campaign brought attention to the post.
Spectrum News asked Mucarsel-Powell about the matter while she was at a news conference in Orlando Tuesday.
“So, I’m not going to answer to any Rick Scott press releases,” said Mucarsel-Powell. “If he’d like to talk about any issue, we can debate. I’ve accepted three debates, and he still has time to talk about the issues important to Floridians.”
Meantime, Scott is calling for an investigation.
Spectrum News checked with the Miami-Dade Supervisor of Elections to see if there are any such plans for an investigation, but the supervisor’s office did not immediately respond back.
As she makes campaign stops around the state, “DMP,” as her supporters call her, is making a point to talk with young voters, including students at colleges and universities.
Despite criticisms by her opponent about the economic record of Democrats, Mucarsel-Powell says she’s the one who will work for Florida’s young people.
“Bringing good paying jobs to our youth that want to stay in our state – that’s what I’m about – I’m not about standing with the other side that continues to attack and bring chaos and division,” said Mucarsel-Powell. “Let’s come together and denounce that, and create a better future for all of us.”
While Republicans are trying to tie democrats to what they say are economic struggles people are facing, Mucarsel-Powell is pointing out that Rick Scott has also been in Washington as a Senator for six years – and Florida’s Governor before that.
She’s trying to tie those economic struggles to his record.
Mucarsel-Powell met with Alachua County Democrats in Gainesville on Tuesday evening before heading to Jacksonville for a planned rally with Sen Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., on Wednesday.
