RIVERVIEW, Fla. — Drivers say a busy intersection may need to be changed to handle the growing congestion in the area: Boyette Road and U.S. 301.

For drivers on westbound Boyette Road, trying to turn left onto southbound U.S. 301 is not always easy as there is only one left turn lane.

Resident Steven Robinson says that can lead to big backups in the intersection.

“It’s crazy in the afternoon and in the morning,” Robinson said.

He says only having the one left turn lane can lead to extra delays for drivers waiting in the through lanes.

“That left lane gets backed up all the way to the through lane,” Robinson said. “All the cars that are stuck behind then have to wait for the light to change again to make more turns before they can go straight through and go to Gibsonton Drive.”

The current setup on westbound Boyette Road at U.S. 301 is five lanes: One left turn lane, two through lanes and two right lanes.

During rush hour especially, Robinson says that setup can lead to a lot of frustration.

“You have to fight to get over to get around them. Or you have to wait for the light to the change again,” Robinson said.

He’d like to see the intersection converted so that it has two left turn lanes.

“They either need to extend that lane farther back. Or my suggestion, just move over everything one lane, where you have two lanes going south on U.S. 301,” Robinson said.

FDOT officials said the current left turn lane on Boyette Road westbound to U.S. 301 southbound is approximately 335 feet in length.

A future construction project will add a second left turn lane and both lanes will be 780 feet long, which should help move traffic through better.

FDOT says that project starts early next year.
