“I remember when I was in school the teachers that I remember the most were the ones who kind of stuck out,” Powers said. “So I kinda of want to be that teacher and I just make it fun for the kids because when I make it fun for them it’s fun for me.”
Powers uses his experiences in the classroom and at home to develop lesson plans that will keep his students engaged.
“I have children and I think about, you know, if I’m doing something and they’re looking at me like they’re bored,” he said. “Then they’re not really learning because they’re thinking about a million other things so if I can get them having fun and thinking about what we’re doing then the learning is going to stick with them.”
Powers teaches his own children.
His daughter is in this class and he teaches his son in another.
“I treat my students the same way I treat my own kids,” Powers said. “So when one of my own kids is my student, it’s really the same thing I don’t do it any different.
“It was a little awkward at first she would call me dad so actually getting her to call me Mr. Powers was probably the biggest challenge.”
