HUDSON, Fla. — A new educational hub has opened at Camp Indian Echo, to benefit the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida.
It’s thanks to a special grant from Tampa Bay Water.
“It gives the girls an idea of what we can do in our daily lives to help protect our source waters,” says Renee Murch, Vice President of camps and facilities with the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida.
At Camp Indian Echo, water conservation efforts are being made thanks to a mini-grant from Tampa Bay Water.
“We have approximately 4,000 girls who visit Camp Indian Echo, and every single one of those girls who visit will have the opportunity to benefit from this program,” said Murch.
The Girl Scouts of West Central Florida are the recent recipients of that funding. The new educational hub is called ‘The Wonders of Water.'
“It’s really important for girls to understand where the water comes from when they turn on their tap, and that’s really what this program does," said Murch.
"By them having that knowledge, they’re better able to take action at home and in their communities to make a difference and to improve our source water.”
The funding is also being used in other areas around the camp, including a pump aeration system on Daisy Lake
"That aeration system increases dissolved oxygen to the lake, so it makes it a healthier environment for our plants and our aquatic life, and it makes it a better environment for swimming for the girls and for boating.”
It’s all about teaching the Girl Scouts, as Murch says, better ways to protect and improve the environment.
“With the addition of this aeration system, we’re going to be able to provide lakeside programming and programming at our waterfront more often for our girls because the lake will continue to be healthy," Murch said. "We’ll also be able to provide that source water education through our educational area.”
So that future generations can continue to learn from the ecosystem.
Nonprofits still have time to apply for Tampa Bay Water’s mini-grant program. The deadline is this Friday. You can learn how to apply online here.
