BRANDON, Fla. – With two weeks left before Christmas, families everywhere are busy shopping for holiday presents.

But they’re not the only ones out making sure kids will have something under the tree.

Starting Wednesday, security officers with Hillsborough County Public Schools are making sure the students they keep safe have gifts for Christmas.

They will be busy at Bay area Walmarts buying the gifts. This has become an annual tradition for Hillsborough County Schools officers.

This year, officers at 15 schools are participating.

Hillsborough County Public Schools Chief of Security John Newman said they’ll be buying toys but also things the kids can use for schools.

The toys will be delivered before winter break starts Dec. 20.

“We want them to know its coming from us,” Newman said of the effort. “(And) it comes from the heart. But it also teaches the team how to give back.

“All year long we’re making sure the kids are safe, their campuses are safe. And we can’t lose fact that we’re her to service the schools but also to serve the students.”
