ORLANDO, Fla. — With Christmas now less than a week away, people are already starting to begin their travel.
According to AAA, more than 119 million people are estimated to be traveling during the Christmas and New Year season, with almost 8 million expected to do so by air.
What You Need To Know
- Travelers are starting to take to the air and roads for holiday travel
- More than 119 million people are forecast to travel over Christmas and the New Year, AAA says
- TSA has implemented credential authentication technology to use facial recognition to verify identities
- Travelers can opt out, and then TSA agents will check manually
The Transportation Security Administration lines are already pretty long and active at Orlando International Airport.
Security agents are doing so with some new checkpoint screening technology that some people may not be aware of.
For example, some airports, like MCO, are using credential authentication technology, or CAT units, to use facial recognition of travelers’ faces to verify their identity.
The technology also verifies flight details and pre-screening status.
Participation in this facial recognition is optional for travelers, however.
For those who don’t want their photo taken, TSA agents will instead check manually with no delay.
One mother and son who are traveling to New York for the holidays shared their thoughts.
“You know we knew it was coming, and it’s already been in existence for a while, and so, now it’s coming into the public, I’m not surprised and I’m not bothered by it,” said traveler Andrea Garza. “I don’t see it really as a threat because people can really take our picture pretty much anywhere, so I’m just like, just take it and let me on the plane.“
The photos taken during the TSA screening are not stored or saved but just used to verify identities, officials say.
TSA also shared tips for those traveling with gifts.
It suggests that travelers don’t wrap their gifts because they will be treated like luggage and could be opened. Instead, officials suggest using gift bags to make for an easier process.
