PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Shlomo Subs in Palm Harbor has been giving away hundreds of bikes to kids in need — especially in the aftermath of hurricanes Helene and Milton.
The restaurant has done this for the past 13 years, and it grows bigger each Christmas. The sub shop puts on a yearly fundraiser to be able to purchase bikes for kids.
This year, they raised over $60,000, which enabled them to purchase more than 600 bikes to give away.
Shlomo Subs employee Christine Rodrigues says the bikes they purchase help those in need, especially in the aftermath of storm season.
“It's all a gift from God,” Rodrigues said.
For some like Gabriela Kelley, this event is incredible. She said her home was damaged by the recent hurricanes, and they are trying to rebuild their lives.
“Money is extremely tight, especially during the holidays where it's not just buying a couple of things for the kids," she said. "We have to actually start over."
Most of the bikes have already been given out. You have to reach out to the organizers of the event before showing up at the sub shop for a bike, but you can contact them at (727) 771-0200) to find out if there are any open slots to pick up a bike.
